To The Solemn Graves

Recently, I visited the Arlington National Cemetery with a couple of friends. We largely wanted to see the Arlington House since it is rumored to be haunted, but we were there on a clear, bright day and there were no ghostly encounters. Still, I find cemeteries a lovely place to visit; I'm intrigued by all the different gravestone designs and I enjoy reading the various inscriptions carved on them. Many cemeteries built in the mid nineteenth century in the United States were like parks; they showed an appreciation for nature and were a quiet space to escape from the sprawling city. “Cemeteries here are all the rage. People lounge in them and use them for walking, making love, weeping, sentimentalizing, and every thing in short,” David Charles Sloane wrote in his book The Last Great Necessity, 1859. So, it's a rather modern view that holds cemeteries as places to be avoided or only visited by hipsters and goths...Anyway, these photographs were taken in the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater, which is simply stunning.

Vampires In Richmond

I drove up to Richmond recently to see a friend and we decided to wander around the Hollywood Cemetery since the weather was so pleasant and I've been wanting to visit it for awhile. A couple of US presidents are buried here along with other notable figures, but I was most intrigued by the story of "the Richmond vampire." Which is an urban legend born from the collapse of a tunnel in 1925 and partially takes place in this cemetery. Urban legends are so entertaining...

Camping In The Tombs

I hopped down to Georgia the other day to visit my sister who lives in Atlanta. We then took a little trip down to Savannah where summer was still going strong and managed to meet up with a couple of my cousins; making it quite the family get-together since we're usually rather scattered and reunions are infrequent. One of my cousins suggested we visit the Bonaventure Cemetery and it was truly a lovely spot dripping with Spanish moss and filled with dappled sunlight.
I was in Georgia for several days, but these are really my only pictures from the trip because I got my cold there and lost focus in the confusion of being sick (and high on cough syrup). Illness aside, it was a good little trip and now I'm back in Virginia recovering, making collages, and contemplating a pixie cut. Fall makes me restless.
